It’s tempting to keep your head buried in the sand when it comes to money, but it’s a recipe for disaster. To take a hold of your finances, be honest about your situation. Identify what’s coming in and going out – only then can you create a budget that fits. Oh, and the sooner you make a plan, the better, so don’t hesitate! Lay everything out on the table (metaphorically or literally) and move forward from there. Don’t forget: budgets aren’t about restriction, but rather about understanding your financial position and spending accordingly. Much like a crash diet, strict ‘$50 a week’ budgets do not work. Be realistic.
A common misconception is that budgets are only for the boring stuff, like bills and essential living expenses. Wrong! Fun activities like travel are essential for your quality of life, so they deserve a place in your budget just as much as food and electricity. Start putting a small amount into a ‘holiday fund’ every week – it will reduce the burden when it’s time to book your next getaway, while also giving you something to work towards and get excited about (before you’ve even decided where you’re going!).
While you probably don’t expect your kids to pay for much of their holiday (if anything), it is a good idea to teach them early on that fun activities like travel cost money. They’ll understand the value of holidays, and probably be more appreciative for the investment you’ve made. But instead of lecturing them, make this lesson a fun one. Have your kids pick out their own piggy bank, wallet or money tin that they can slowly fill with ‘holiday savings’ as they earn them. When you go on your trip, maybe they could buy themselves a souvenir to remember it by?
We’re all hankering to get overseas, but perhaps now – considering the cost of flights and accommodation, not to mention food and tours – isn’t the best time for an all-inclusive holiday abroad? There are still plenty of adventures to be had in your own backyard, especially if you keep an eye out for deals that will make your holiday more affordable. The tourism industry is still struggling and there are great bargains to be found if you’re willing to be flexible. Keep an eye on our ‘Special Offers’ page to snag a bargain!
