Dr Jerry Schwartz became the official owner of Paradise Resort on 29 February 2020 and upon purchasing the resort said it was important for Paradise Resort to have a renewed vision, as premium family resorts in such prime locations were very rare.
“Paradise Resort has accommodated families from all over Australia and overseas for four decades, providing one of the most enjoyable holiday experiences imaginable,” - Dr Schwartz, who has three young children himself.

"The Resort" officially opened on 23 October 1982, offering 409 guest rooms along with an onsite bakery, hairdressing salon and nightclub. The property quickly became a popular destination for sporting groups, families and couples seeking a Gold Coast getaway. Throughout the 1980s, it also gained national exposure through the popular television dating show Perfect Match, hosted by Cameron Daddo, with stays at the resort regularly featured as a major prize for contestants.
In early 1987, the property entered a new chapter when "The Resort" was renamed "Ocean Blue Resort". Building on its reputation as a popular Gold Coast holiday destination, Ocean Blue continued to welcome families, couples and groups.
In 1996, international hotel management group Accor took over management of the property, which became known as "Mercure Resort Surfers Paradise". This period marked an important shift towards the family holiday market, including the introduction of Australia's first Gecko Kids Club under the Accor brand.
On 16 July 2007, the resort entered a new era as "Paradise Resort Gold Coast". Independently operated and with a renewed focus on family holidays, the resort continued to evolve its facilities, entertainment and experiences around the needs of families, laying the foundations for the Paradise Resort guests know today.
In 2011, the resort was purchased by Melbourne's Zagame family, who invested approximately $6 million over the following five years into revitalising the property. Major improvements included refurbishments to the waterpark, outdoor pool area, guest rooms and other resort facilities. Under the leadership of General Manager David Brook, the resort also introduced Australia's first hotel-based ice-skating rink, adding another unique attraction to its growing family offering.
By 2015, Paradise Resort's future was uncertain after the property was sold to the Ralan Group, with plans to demolish the resort and redevelop the site as The Ruby Collection, a major four-tower development. Those plans ultimately did not proceed and, by July 2019, Paradise Resort was once again offered for sale.
In November 2019, Paradise Resort was given a new lease on life when it was purchased by one of Australia's largest private hotel owners, Dr Jerry Schwartz, with settlement finalised on 29 February 2020. Rather than redeveloping the site, Dr Schwartz committed to preserving the much-loved family resort, unveiling a renewed vision and a $12 million investment plan to revitalise the property and strengthen its position as one of Australia's favourite family holiday destinations.
On 27 March 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic forced Paradise Resort to close its doors for the first time in its history. Rather than standing still, the unexpected closure became an opportunity for transformation. Dr Schwartz invested more than $3 million to begin a much-needed refurbishment, while General Manager David Brook found new ways to keep the resort team engaged. Staff from across the property rolled up their sleeves and took on new roles — chefs picked up paintbrushes, housekeepers worked in the gardens and Kids Club attendants helped clean and refresh the waterpark. After months of hard work behind closed doors, Paradise Resort reopened on 1 September 2020 with a refreshed property, an inspired team and a renewed vision for the future.
As COVID restrictions eased and Australian families began travelling again, Paradise Resort continued to expand its family experiences. New attractions included a miniature train, carousel and large central activity screen, alongside new characters, live shows and an expanded program of activities bringing even more entertainment and energy to the resort.
Cyclone Alfred brought an unexpected challenge in March 2025, resulting in a week-long closure while the team completed repairs, restored power and managed the disruption to guests and bookings. Despite the setback, the year delivered significant progress. A further 48 guest rooms were refurbished, including two Accessible Family Rooms, while work continued on major new facilities including an adults-only pool and lounge bar, Activities Hub and multipurpose arena. The resort's family attractions also continued to evolve with the addition of a new Clip 'n Climb Adventure Wall and refreshed theming throughout Cleo's Castle and Dusty's Digs. From a princess carriage to playful animal figures, the enhancements added another touch of magic to the Paradise Resort experience and set the scene for the resort's next chapter.

Voted Australia's Best Family Resort 15 years in a row, Paradise Resort Gold Coast is currently Australia's only resort with a giant Waterpark, Ice-Skating Rink, Kids Club, Daily Activities, Miniature Train and loads more all under one roof.
