But trying to keep a child tame and happy on a plane ride, particularly their first one, can be a daunting task. Luckily, with these tips in mind, you can reduce the likelihood of in-flight temper tantrums and help your holidays have a great start.
Timing is everything when you’re travelling with a baby. While it can be difficult to know what their sleeping pattern will be like if you book well in advance, it’s always a good idea to consider your little one’s routine when choosing your flight time. If they usually get an afternoon nap, try to make sure you won’t be going through security or moving around too much during that time. Skipping naps equals cranky toddlers, and no one wants that.
Can you remember the first time your ears popped on a flight? It wasn’t much fun. Now imagine you’re a toddler in a brand-new environment, surrounded by strangers with unexplained ear pain – yikes. Have a few gummy lollies on hand to give them during take-off and landing. They’ll be excited about the treat and less likely to succumb to ear pain. It’s a win-win – especially if there are a couple of leftovers for you to eat, too.
Airports are big and crazy and therefore, exciting for kids. Arrive as early as you can to allow them time to settle into their surroundings, and ensure you aren’t rushing through the check in and security process. Try to get to your gate with enough time to let your little one have a run around, too. This will help them burn off energy and make them more likely to sleep through the flight.
Travel doesn’t have to be scary – in fact, it should be exciting. Spend time before your flight reading books about planes, showing your child photos and videos and even pointing them out when they fly overhead. Explain how flying works and what they can expect. Oh, and be sure to bring lots of activities to keep them entertained for the flight. Both for their sanity, and for your own.
