G:link Stage Two Now Open!

Posted in: Gold Coast

G:et ready, G:et set, it’s time to travel light to Helensvale!

The completion of the second stage of the Gold Coast light rail will mean getting around the Gold Coast will be even easier with G:link services travelling from Broadbeach to Helensvale, offering 19 convenient station stops.

Stage 2 features include:

  • A 7.3 kilometre connection from heavy rail to light rail
  • An 11 minute trip from Helensvale station to Gold Coast University Hospital (GCUH) station
  • Convenience for commuters with two park ‘n’ ride facilities, providing an additional 400 parks at Helensvale station and 1,000 parks at Parkwood station

Providing work to more than 2000 mainly local people during the past 17 months, the project has been a key feature for residents in the Helensvale, Arundel and Parkwood areas. The ongoing cooperation and patience of the local community, businesses and motorists has been vital to the overall success of the project.

With completion targeted well ahead of the Games in 2018, the project team has worked hard to deliver the light rail extension without compromising safety and reliability of the local road network. It is due to this effort that passengers will soon enjoy a seamless journey between the CBDs of Queensland’s two largest cities – Gold Coast and Brisbane.

During the Games in 2018, more than six million additional trips are forecast across the Gold Coast transport network. Light rail will provide direct access to arts and cultural activities at Broadbeach and Surfers Paradise, while also moving spectator passengers between key transportation hubs.

The light rail system will also support transport to Southport, Broadbeach and Labrador competition venues and continue to cater for community, commuter and visitor travel along the Gold Coast.

As Queensland’s first light rail system, G:link represents a major step forward in transforming the city into a modern, accessible destination. The completion of Stage 2 is another milestone shaping the Gold Coast as a truly world class city.
